Metkovic near Dubrovnik, Croatia, 20 km from the coast, is a town and harbor down the lower flow of Neretva river. One of the city's most prominent landmarks is the church of St.Elijah. Metkovic is situated very close to the ancient Roman settlement of Narona (today known as Vid). Another important sight is the Ornithological Museum with about 250 specimens of various bird species of the surrounding area. The wider area around Metkovic is an excellent hunting ground and it also abounds in good fishing spots. Hutovo Blato (well-known hunting ground in Herzegovina) is very close to Metkovic. The waters there abound with fish (carps, eels). In the winter months this is the habitat for various species of wading birds, but mostly wild ducks.
While on holidays in Metkovic in Neretva rivijera, check out the local restaurants offering the famous Neretva-style fish stew ("brudet") and grilled eels. The first written mention of Metkovic dates back to 1422 when it was mentioned in a court document as a small farming town. Even today, Metkovic has kept the agriculture tradition, mostly by growing citrus fruit.
The more intensive development of Metkovic began in early 18th century, but the change that was a real boost to the development of this town happened under the brief French rule in in the early 19th century, during which „Napoleon's road“ was started and Metkovic became an important traffic point. The old town core of Metkovic, with stone houses and narrow Mediterranean-style streets, dates back to the 19th century. Apartments and accommodation in Metkovic are a preferred option of many tourists who come to explore this vibrant little town in southern Dalmatia.
