Stari Grad (Hvar) Hot

Stari Grad (Hvar)

Stari Grad (Old Town) is located on the north side of the island of Hvar, in a deep bay, inhabited from the 3rd century BC by Greeks. It is a real historical center of the island of Hvar, which proves even three historical collections: archaeological in the Dominican convent, maritime and hidroarqueological collection in palace Biankini.

In Stari Grad there is one of the most significant examples of Renaissance architecture countryside of eastern Adriatic coast: Tvrdalj, established poet Peter Hektorovića mansion, built in the first half of the 16th century, with a tower and pond that is still in operation, and numerous inscriptions on the passing of Fortune and guidelines for the moral life. The mansion is located near the church of Sv. Deadline from 16 century and the Baroque parish church of Sv. Stephen from the turn of the 17th in 18 century. There is also a Dominican convent from the 15th century, which has suffered damage and numerous updates, and now keeps a database of valuable library, a collection of paintings and fossils, and lapidary. Valuable residential architecture with examples from the period of 16 to 18 century testifies to the continuity of high culture living on the island Hvar. The most important sport event is the Faros Marathon, Croatian international championship in the long-distance swimming.

Once in Stari Grad many surrounding places, coves and secluted bays can be visited. Take a trip to small fishermen and winemakers villages of Ivan Dolac and Zavala where you will be surprised by a large number of small pebbly beaches, small, familly owned, restaurants. Jelsa, 15 min. car drive from Stari Grad is rich in folklore and events while Vrboska capture visitors attention and imagination with its small, stone, bridges, like in some farytale.

Ferry lines connect Stari Grad to the city of Split. If you travel in direction to north from Makarska, Peljesac or Dubrovnik the best way to reach Hvar island and Stari Grad is taking ferry Drvenik - Sucuraj. In stari Grad beaches are gravel and concrete, and the main public beach during the evenings becomes a night club in the open, with a bar open till late night.

Story about the photographer

The story is that I was visiting my aunt in Split in August and had a day visit to STARI GRAD, Hvar which was amazingly beautiful! I hired a bike from a little stand which was outside a kafana on a corner and about 5 minutes walk to bus stop. There was a photographer there at the time (tall, dark long curly hair, white suit) who chatted to me for some time and then took a photo. He asked me to leave my email and he would send me the photo. When I returned from my bike ride no one was at the bike stand so I couldn't leave my email. I was disappointed because it was the only photo I had of me on Hvar and I was travelling on my own.
I guess it's just a small but important part of my 3 month trip in Europe that I feel I'd love to have with me.
So, if you know anyone who could help me out with some names of photographers, in Stari Grad, I would be very grateful. Please send your message through Contact us link in the upper right corner of Dalmatianet.com.
