Sucuraj (Hvar)

Sucuraj is a small town on the eastern coast of the island of Hvar, situated in a deep bay, which name comes from the St. George, the patron saint of Sucuraj.

The oldest building preserved to the present is the Franciscan monastery, which was probably built in the 14th century, but was later reconstructed. Slightly younger is Baroque church of Sv. Ante from 17th century. In the same century was built the Venetian fortress Fortica, preserved only partially.

Fishing is the main economy seats but also villagers are engaged in production of olive oil and dried figs.

Near the center of town is the most popular beach - pebble beach with concrete Cesmina approach. However, thanks to twenty kilometers long coast, you can find beaches with flat rocks, which slopes gently into the sea, secluded coves, such as bays and Perna Mrtnovik or nude beaches in the auto-camp in Bay Mlaska.

Sucuraj is best reached by ferry from Drvenik (80 km south of Split), the journey takes about 45 min. in the summer season and the ferries sail all day every forty minutes. From Sucuraj to the other end of the island leads the main island road connecting the town of Jelsa, Vrboska, Stari Grad and Hvar, but know that is the nearest gas station far away as 50 km from Sucuraj.

Don't miss to visit Bogomolje, village that preserves indigenous construction and housing on the island, as well as a specific dialect. The village is 21 kilometers away from Sucuraj.
