Polace (read: polache) is perhapsĀ the most ancient village on the island, and is the largest and most sheltered harbour not only on Mljet but elswhere. It is surrounded by 4 islands. It's one of the most favourite places visited by sail and other boats.
Polace has a number of ancient ruins dating from the 1st to the 6th Centuries. However, of greatest significance is the Roman palace from 2nd Century whose walls dominates place. In Polace there are a few restaurants, supermarkets, souvenir shops, Tourist board office and the kiosk of the National Park. Because of its sheltered position, Polace is very popular bay among sailors and yachtsman to do their anchorage there. The bay itself is 5.6 km long and about 4 km wide. The village of PolaÄe has just over one hundred permanent inhabitants. It has couple of restaurants and cafes, as well as a shop for basic provisions. Polace has a number of ancient ruins dating from the 1st to the 6th centuries.
