Sibenik is a significant cultural center of northern Dalmatia. Located at the mouth of the Krka river, thanks to its location has good transport links with the rest of Croatia. Å ibenik was first mentioned back in 1066th year, but experienced a boom in the 15th and 16 century as an important military and strategic center.
Protected by a natural bay, it has been strengthened by raising the imposing fortress: fort st. Nicholas (16th century), St. Michael (15.-18.st.) vol. Ivan (17th century) and Šubićevac (17th century). Historic core, and urban landscapes are well preserved, with many attractive views that attract primarily lovers of art and history.
Sibenik's most famous monument is the Cathedral of St. James, the pride of the whole Croatian architectural heritage, in 2000 included on the World Heritage List of UNESCO. Sibenik cathedral was built from the 1431st to 1535th. The unique mounting technique of building with stone blocks, and two of its most important builders were George Matejev Dalmatians and Nicholas of Florence. In the center there are other valuable buildings like the Renaissance town hall on the main square, built in the 16th century or 4 tank of water from the 15th century converted to a museum in which the interactive content introduces the history of Sibenik. There is also the old palace is Knezeva where is the Museum of the City which kept archaeological, cultural, historical, ethnographic and gallery collection. As the cultural center of the region, Å ibenik offers a rich program of events.
The city hosts the International Children's Festival - multimedia cultural event which takes place from mid June to early July, and presents the various forms of creativity for children and children's artistic production. In the second half of August is held the festival Evenings of Dalmatian chanson in which live performing old and new songs, and accompanied by the occasional exhibitions and concerts of classical and sacred music. In addition, the town throughout July and August takes place Å ibenik cultural summer, during which there are concerts of classical music on the towers of St. And St. Nicholas. Michael, as well as exhibitions, performances and concerts of folk music. Lovers of antiques should know that throughout the year, every Saturday, near the church of Sv. Frane is held Fair of Antiques.
In the vicinity of Sibenik, there are even two national parks: Kornati and Krka. Sibenik exceptional cultural heritage and natural beauty surrounding it make this city one of the most attractive tourist destinations of the Croatian coast.
