Ugljan town

 

Ugljan, a town and small harbour on the north-eastern part of the island of Ugljan, 11 km to the northwest of Preko; population 1070. Chief occupations include farming, viniculture, olive growing, fruit growing, fishing and tourism.

Ugljan lies on the regional road running along the island. Smaller yachts can dock on the landward side of the breakwater anchoring ground for larger vessels is provided to the southeast of the small port. The old Franciscan monastery from 1430 is located on the cape closing the harb our in the north. It includes a onenave Gothic church from 1447 Interesting Romanesque capitals are built in the cloister. The inner court of the monastery has an epitaph of the founder of the Glagolitic print shop in Rijeka Simun Kozicic-Benja (c. 1460 - 1536 ). There are several modest summer villas by noble families of Zadar in the village Ruins of a Roman villa have been excavated in the Batalaza cove. On Kuran an elevation southeast of the village, remains of a prehistoric hill-fort have been found.
